Today I had the pleasure of welcoming Nobel Peace Laureate Betty Williams to the University as she joins us for this year’s Peace Jam. Betty jointly won the peace prize with Mairead Corrigan in 1976 in recognition of their work, as co-founders of the Peace People organisation, responding to the violence in Northern Ireland. She has worked tirelessly in the pursuit of peace ever since.
The Peace Jam event kicks off tonight with a lecture by Betty where she will speak on ‘Community-based solutions to threats and violence’. Tomorrow She’ll be inspiring young people at the Peace Jam youth conference also here on campus.
