UCU strike action – information for students

The University and College Union have placed the University on formal notice that they intend to hold two days of strike action next week on 22 and 24 March. Please be assured that the University will be working hard to minimise the disruption for our students.

Unless notified by your academic school that learning or assessment activity has been cancelled, you should attend as normal. Students who support the strikes by not attending  will not be given good cause with regard to extenuating circumstances.

UCU are protesting against proposed changes to USS, a national pension scheme available to academic and academic related staff at the University. It is disappointing that the University, find ourselves in conflict with the UCU regarding the proposed changes to USS at a time when the sector faces unprecedented challenges arising from the wider political and economic situation and the major changes in public funding for universities.  The issues surrounding pension provision in the UK are complex but I am personally  committed to ensuring that this University plays a full part in seeking to resolve the current difficulties in a constructive and positive fashion as speedily as possible.
