The Centre for Applied Social Research has received funding from the British Academy to undertake a three year programme of research: “A comparative study of women’s work and childcare experience in the Middle East”. The research will study the relationship between childcare, and childcare policies, and the low rate of labour market participation of Middle Eastern women. It will focus on a key problem – how to manage the combination of paid work and childcare. The research will incorporate compartive case studies of certain Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar and Turkey. It aims to produce new emperical information in an under-researched area, to further debate as to whether ‘western’ models of welfare support for parenting and childcare are appropriate in other contexts, and inform policy development. This research will be lead by Professor Simon Duncan at the Centre. For further information please contact Simon Duncan: s.s.duncan@bradford.ac.uk
