Welcome to Careers – What to expect in Semester One 2020

Things are weird right now, and we’re all getting used to an existence that would have been unthinkable this time last year. There you go – that’s the cliché out of the way, so now we can get on with welcoming you to the new academic year, and letting you know how we’re dealing with things in Careers.

Services on campus

Obviously we want to keep everyone safe, so we’ve put a lot of work into ensuring that the Careers space is COVID-secure. This means that unfortunately our comfy sofas have been removed for the time being and replaced with plastic chairs which can be wiped clean – there will be wipes and cleaning products available. The PCs have also gone, which means it looks a bit sparse but there is now plenty of room for everyone to maintain a safe distance.

You’ll need to book in advance for all types of appointment, and when you come in you’ll be asked to check in with MyBradford in Student Central, then come and wait in the Careers space. There may then be a bit of choreography required to get you to your appointment location while maintaining social distancing, so don’t be surprised if you’re asked to wait whilst going through doors and along corridors. There will also be plenty of hand sanitiser to apply during the process.

In your appointment, your adviser will be wearing a face covering (probably a face shield) and there will be a clear plastic barrier between you, but hopefully aside from this appointments will take place as normal. Bear in mind that we won’t be able to take paper documents like CVs from you, so try and remember to attach any electronic versions when you book your appointment (you can add up to three).

Online services

All our appointments are also available remotely, so if you’re away from campus or would prefer not to come in, that’s fine – we can speak to you over a video or phone call, or send you feedback by email – just let us know how you want to be contacted when you book.

Careers Webinars Autumn 2020 logo

Workshops for this term have also been transformed into our webinars series, featuring a range of useful careers topics. These online sessions also have a couple of extra benefits, as you can take part from wherever you are, and catch up later if you missed out.

We’ve also got some great online careers events coming up which will feature lots of opportunities for part-time jobs, internships and graduate jobs, so keep an eye out for announcements coming soon.

And don’t forget, there’s loads of online resources on our website, SharePoint, My Career and Employability Centre and Build My Career, so please feel free to explore these sites.
