We’re the most sustainable in Yorkshire

When I talk to staff about our values, being Sustainable is often highlighted as one of the areas within which we have achieved the most. Reducing our impact on the environment and leading the way in creating sustainable solutions for the future is something we are incredibly passionate about and this has now been reflected in our rise up a national league of environmentally friendly universities to become the most sustainable university in Yorkshire.

The 2010 ‘People & Planet Green League’ measures both management and performance around environmental issues and we scored full marks in the fields of environmental policy, sustainable procurement/fair-trade, staff and student engagement and waste management. We’ve moved up three places from tenth to seventh an improvement made all the more impressive considering we were 31st back 2008. I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting the journey to a greener University of Bradford.

Tuesday’s Ecoversity Awards event was a great opportunity to celebrate all those individuals and groups of both staff and students who have shown great passion and enthusiasm for our work towards a low-carbon, sustainable University. It was a really enjoyable event and I’d like to thank everyone who took part.

We will now be focussing on carbon emissions and water consumption over the next 12 months and I am confident we can continue to rise even higher up the League next year. As we said in our corporate strategy ‘Making Knowledge Work 2009 – 2014’, we are aiming for the number one position by 2014.
